Abyss in i a

(ab-is-sin'yah.) An extensive kingdom of E. Africa, lying between 35° and 43º E. Lon., and 7° 30' and 15° 40′ N. Lat. It consists of two districts, Tigré and Amhara, and Shoa. The country is mountainous, but in the vales the soil is fertile. The rainy season continues from June to September, succeeded without interval by a cloudle sky and a vertical sun, but cold nights follow those scorching days. Though situate between the tropics, the productions of Aby in i a rather resemble those of the temperate than of the torrid zone. A. was a part of ancient Ethiopia; its inhabitants are of a dark olive complexion, (Fig. 5.)
