Durrenstein

(door'rain-stīn,) a vill. of Lower Austria, on the Danube, 40 m. N.W. of Vienna. Here are the ruins of the castle in which Richard Cœur de Lion was immured, 1193-4, through the perfidy of Leopold of Austria. Here, too, the allied Ru ians and Austrians, commanded by Gen. Kutus off, were defeated by the French under Marshal Mortier, 1805. [s. 308]
