Elastic Limit

The unit-stre within which a body recovers its original form after removal of the stre , and above which a permanent set remains; or, that unit-stre below which the elongations or compre ions are proportional to the applied stre es. The mean values of the elastic limits of materials are: for timber 3,000, for cast-iron 4,000, for wrought iron 25,000, and for steel 40,000 lbs. per sq. inch. See ELAS TICITY.
