JOHN WILLIAM, (drā'pur,) an American chemist, physiologist, and author, B. in England, 1811, took his degree of M. D. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1836, became succe ively profe or of natural sciences in Hampden-Sidney Coll., Va., and in 1841, profe or of chemistry in N. Y. University, and, in 1850, of physiology. Of his numerous works we may mention Human Physiology, Statical and Dynamical; or the Conditions and Course of the Life of Man, 1856; and a History of the American Civil War, 1867-8. [s. 301]
