hydrochloric a., a colorle gas, HCI: its solution in 68 parts of water (acidum hydrochloricum, U. S. P.) is a digestant. The 10 per cent. solution (acidum hydrochloricum dilutum) is exhibited in doses of 3-10 min. (0.2-0.666 c.c.). hydro cinnamic a., a balsamic cinnamic-acia derivative, C,H,.CH,CH,.COOH, in white needles: used in tuberculosis. Dose, $24 gr. (0.05-0.15 gm.). Called also pkenylpropionic a. hydro cumaric a., an acid, C,H,.OH.C.H,COOH, sometimes found in the urine, and derived from protein and tyrasin putrefaction. hydrocyanic a., a colorle liquid, HCN, extremely poisonous. Its 2 per cent. solution (acidum hydro cyan i cum dilutum) is a valuable antispasmodic. Dose, 1-5 min. (0.066-0.333 c.c.). hydrofluoric a., a gaseous acid, HF, extremely poisonous. Its solution (1 part in 200 of water) is prescribed for goiter. Dose, 20-30 min. (1.25-2 c.c.). The gas, much diluted with air, has been used as an inhalant in phthisis. hydro para cumaric a., an acid which has been detected in the urine of dogs. droquinon-acetic a. See homogentisic a. hydrosulphuric a., an offensive gas, HS, much used as a chemic reagent. For tuberculosis, the gas has been prescribed as a rectal injection and for inhalation. hydroxy butyric a., a monobasic acid, C,H,O;, derived from the urine of various diseases, either as a crystalline solid or as a syrup. hydrozosophalic a., a toxic agent obtainable from artificial salicylic acid. hydrurilic a., a crystalline acid, C,H,N,O,. hyoglycocholic a., an acid, C.7H,,NO,, occurring in the bile of pigs. hyotaurocholic a., an acid, C,,H,,NSO,, occurring in pigs’ bile in the form of its sodium salt. hypo romous a., the acid, HBrO, forming hyporomites, which are used in testing for urea. ochlorous a., the compound HClO, a disinfectant and bleaching agent. Its salts (hypochlorites) are somewhat in use as medicinal agents. hypogeic a., a fatty acid, C,,H»O., found in the oil of the peanut, Ar’achis hypoga’a. hyponitrous a., a monobasic acid, HNO. hypophosphorous a., the acid, H,PO,, forming hypophosphites. hypophosphorous a., dilute, a ro per cent. solution of the acid in water: used like the hypophosphites. Dose, 10-30 min. (0.666-2 c.c.). hyposulphurous a., thiosulphuric acid. hypoxanthylic a., any nucleic acid containing hypo xanthin. _ichthulinic a., an acid derived from ichthulin by treating the latter with alkalis. ichthyol-sulonic a., an ichthyol derivative, which, with its salts, is serviceable in skin diseases and in gynecology. Its ammonium salt is commonly prescribed as ichthyol (q. v.). igasuric a., an acid found in St. Ignatius bean. indol acetic a., a compound occurring in the urine in minute quantities in pathologic conditions of the digestive tract. in do xylic a., an acid, CgH;NO,, formed by fusing ethyl ester with caustic soda. indoxyl sulphonic a., an acid from the indican of the urine. See indican (2). inosinic a., a compound, CyHyN,O,;, found in muscle in small amounts. lodic a., a monobasic acid, HIO,; its dilute solutions are alterative: used hypodermically. iodo-oxy quinolin sulphonic a. Same as loretin. iodosalicylic a., an antipyretic, analge- sic, and antiseptic substance. Dose, 5-10 gr. (0.333-0.666 gm.). iodosobenzoic a., an antiseptic agent, CyH,.OI.COOH,:, used like iodoform. iridic a., an acid, C,6H,,0;, from orris root. isanic a., a crystalline acid, C,,H0;, from isano oil: a violent purgative. iset! ionic a., sulphurous acid in which an atom of Η is replaced by oxy ethylene. isobilianic a., an acid, C,,H.,Os, derived along with bilianic acid by the oxidation of dehydrocholalic acid. _isobutyl amido acetic a. (CHy),CHCH,COOH, of unpleasant odor, found in cheese, in the sweat of the feet, in the urine of small-pox, in typhus, and in acute yellow atrophy of the liver. Sce cynurenic a. laccic a., a brownish-red, crystalline compound. obtained from lac dye. lactic a.,a diatomic monobasic acid, C,H,O;. occurring in four isomeric forms. Ordinary lactic acid (cthylidene lactic a.. fermentation lactic a.) is a syrupy liquid, CH,.CH(OH)CO: OH, produced in the fermentation of milk. It is used in diabetes. in indigestion, as a solvent of membrane in diphtheria. and as a local application for tuberculous ulcers. Dose, 15-30 min. (1-2 c.c.). Dextrorotary lactic acid (sarcolactic a., para lactic a.) occurs in the urine and blood after muscular exertion, and in the urine in poisoning by phosphorus and after removal of the liver. Optically inactive lactic acid occurs in the muscles and the brain. Ethylene lactic acid, CH,(OH).CH;.CO.OH, is not found in the body. One variety of the latter is known as hydro acrylic acid. lactonic a., a crystallizable acid, C,H,.0,, derived from milk-sugar, gum arabic, and galactose. lactucic a., a bitter principle from lactucarium. laricic a., larixinic a crystallizable acid, C\oH,,0;, from the bark of the European larch: called also larizin. lauric a., laurostearic @., a compound, C,,H2,0;, from oil of laurel and other oils. leuconic a., a crystalline acid, C,0O, + 4H;O, obtained by oxidizing croconic acid. levo tartaric a., a form of tartaric acid which turns the plane of polarization to the left. levulinic a., an acid, CH,;COCH,CH,COOH, or B-acetyl-propionic acid, from the nucleic acid of the thymus gland. It has been prescribed for scurvy, and its iron salt, ferric malate, has been employed in medicine. malonic a., a crystalline acid, C;H,O,, formed by oxidizing malic acid with chromium trioxid. mandelic a., a ctystalline compound, C,H,.CH(OH)(CO.OH), from oil of bitter almonds.
