ANZAC

a name by which the Australian and New Zealand troops serving with the British forces during the World War became popularly known. The name originated from the letters indicating ‘Australian and New Zealand Army Corps,’ when that body was still in Egypt before being transported to the Gallipoli Peninsula, where it so pronouncedly distinguished itself. Japanese statesman; was twice amba ador to Germany, once to U.S. (1906-7), and four times a minister in his own country; presided over revision of treaties with foreign countries (1897).
