THORNTON, SIR EDWARD

(18171906), an English diplomatist, graduated from Pembroke College, Cambridge, in 1840. After some years spent in the legation at Mexico and in various S. American emba ies, he was in 1867 nominated as amba ador at Washington. a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was 6. in Ireland, and came to America in 1717. Educated at Worcester, he practiced medicine in London derry, New Hampshire, and was with Sir William Pepper ell as surgeon, in the Louis burg expedition in 1845. He was elected president of the provincial convention in 1775, and a delegate to the Continental Congre in November 1776, when he was permitted to sign the Declaration of Independence though not as yet elected a member of the Congre .
