Scylacēum

, a town of the Brutii, built by Mnestheus at the head of an A then i an colony. As Virgil has applied the epithet Navifragum to Scylaceum, some suppose that either the poet was mistaken in his knowledge of the place, because there are no apparent dangers to navigation there, or that he confounds this place with a promontory of the same name on the Tuscan sea. Servius explains this pa age by supposing that the houses of the place were originally built with the shipwrecked ve els of Uly es’ fleet—a most puerile explanation!
