Anthony, ST

ab. 251-356. Egyptian, Father of Christian monasticism. He became an anchorite early in life, and was consistent in his asceticism and avoidance of society; but many followed him into the desert. seeking instruction, and ab. 305 he established a monastery near Fayoum. He was a friend of A than as i us and of orthodoxy, and was greatly revered. Anthony of Padua, ST., 1195-1231. B. in Portugal; famous Francis can preacher; patron saint of the lower animals; canonized 1232. His day is June 13.
