Founder of the South American Mi ionary Society. He was born in England in 1794, and manifested even in childhood the spirit that controlled his later life. When found sleeping on the floor rather than in his bed, he gave as the reason that it was his intention when a man to travel all over the world, and therefore he wished to accustom himself to hardship. He began active service in the navy in 1810, when he was 16 years old, but resigned after the death of his wife in 1834, and wholly consecrated himself to his life-work: “to become the pioneer of a Christian mi ion to the most abandoned heathen.”: 847 He married a second time, and his family shared with him his trials and discomforts for a Never discouraged, when he found long time. the door closed on one side he turned another way. At one time he had joined the mi ionaries to South Africa, but the treachery of a Dutch Then he tried to trader forced them all to flee. At last he secure an entrance to New Guinea. South America as his mi ion-ground, upon settled went to the Falkland Islands as a point from which to reach Tierra del Fuego, and from that time on his life was one series of persevering effort and heroic endurance. So anxious for the formation of the South American Mi ionary Society was Gardiner that in 1844 he guaranteed all expenses for three years and £100 a year thereafter. It was not until 1848 that he saw the mi ion undertaken, and in 1851 he and his companions in its pioneer effort died of starvation through failure of supplies. Marsh (J. W.’), and Stirling (W.
