Horses Aberdeen shire, Yorkshire, etc.; but by far the most numerous and most famous are those cut on the chalk downs of Wilts hire and Berks hire. The great ‘White Horse* is at Uffington in Berks hire, and measures 355 feet from nose to tail, and 120 feet from ear to heel. Like its fellow near Westbury, it is said to commemorate one of Alfred the Great’s victories over the Danes and it is certainly of very ancient date, as it was mentioned; about the time of Henry II. as having been in existence about the time of the Norman Con guest. It has been * scoured,* and probably enlarged, from time to time. Nearly all the other * White Horses ’ are of modern date.
