FREIHERR VON, 1803-1873. Prof. of Chemistry at Gie en 1824-52, where he built the first laboratory for instruction, and at Munich from 1852; Baron 1845; pre-eminent as an experimenter and teacher, and especially famous for Justus Liebig. applications of his science, as the beef extract and other prepared foods, whereby he was a universal benefactor. His chief works have been translated, as Chemistry in its Application to Agriculture and Physiology , 1840; Animal Chemistry , 1842; and Letters on Chemistry and its Relations to Commerce , 1844.
