English divine, defender of Elizabeth an Anglicanism, in his famous Ecclesiastical Polity, whose First Book Pope Urban VIII. declared "worthy to endure until the last fire shall consume all learning." Books I.-IV. appeared 1594, V. 1597. The genuinene of VI.-VIII., 1617-48, has been questioned.
