FUSTIC

A yellow dye stuff. There are two kinds of fustic occasionally used by dyers. Old fustic is the wood of a large tree, the Morus tinct or i a, which grows abundantly in many parts of the West Indies and America; it gives a dingy yellow dye, and is chiefly useful in the production of compound colours. Young fustic is the Rhus cot in us, or Venice sumach, a shrub growing in Italy and the south of France; it gives a greenish-yellow dye, and is also used as an acce ory material. [s. 494]
