franklinite (frangkʻlin it)

[ Franklin (see def.) + -ite2.] An oxid of iron, zinc, and manganese, belonging to the spinel group. It occurs in octahedral crystals and rounded grains, of a black color and metallic luster; it resembles magnetite, but is feebly if at all magnetic. It is found in New Jersey near the vil lage of Franklin or Franklin Furnace (whence the name), a ociated with the zinc oxid zincite, the zinc silicate willemite, the manganese silicates rhodonite and tephroite, and other species.
