pl. [Greek holkos drawing to one's self, trailing, and notos =the back.] Ichthy.: Fishes having marsupial pouches. hol-cus, s. [Lat. holcus; Gr. holkos a kind of gra , probably Hordeum murinum.] Bot.: Soft gra ; a genus of gra es, tribe Phalareæ (q. v.). The spikelets, which are in open pan i cles, are laterally compre ed, the lower flower is hermaphrodite, the upper one male; empty glumes two, the lower one-nerved, the flower glumes five nerved; the lower se ile, hermaphrodite, awnle , the upper pedicel led, male, and with a twisted awn; stigma se ile, feathery.
