[Prefix trachy-, and Greek pteron a wing, a fin.] Ichthy .: The type-genus of Trachypteride (q. v.). Ventrals consisting of several more or le branched rays. Specimens have been taken in the Mediter ranean, the Atlantic, round the Mauritius, and in the Eastern Pacific. Trachypterus arctic us, the Deal-fish, is often met with in the North Atlantic, and specimens are frequently washed ashore on the northern coasts after the equinoctial gales.
