Fish, Hamilton

(1808-1893), born in New York City, was admitted to the bar in 1830. He was elected to the U. S. House of Representatives from New York, serving from 1843 to 1845, and was a State Senator in 1847. He was Governor of New York from 1848 to 1850, and was a U.S. Senator from 1851 to 1857. He was Secretary of State in Grant's Cabinet, serving from 1869 to 1877. He negotiated the Treaty of Washington in 1871, and the St. Domingo treaties.
