AND SCIENC » an educational institution situated at Prospect Park, Brooklyn, N. Y. It developed as an jut growth of the Brooklyn Apprentices’ Library A ociation and dates from 1843. It is one of the most notable educational establishments in New York City, and a center of social, literary, artistic and scientific activities. Reincorporated in 1890, it had since then sxpanded on lines that promise its future preeminence as a national acadamy. The departments of teaching smbrace archeology, architecture, asfronomy, botany, chemistry, domestic science, electricity, engineering, enjomology, geography, geology, law, mathematics, microscopy, mineralogy, music, painting, pedagogy, philology, Rey: photography, physics, politcal science and photography. Its sourses are regarded among the best ition obtainabie in arts and sciences, nd only small fees are charged. The mstitution controls the Brooklyn Mueum, which contains many treasures yf prehistoric America, with the Botanic tardens adjoining it, as well as a Shildren’s Museum, the first of its kind, ind a biological laboratory. It has requently been the recipient of valuable yequests. In 1921 the institute’s four lepartments, education, museums, boanic gardens and biological laboratory, lad an enrollment of 10,850 students. t has a library containing some 25,000 olumes. The institutes permanent unds in 1921 exceeded $1,000,000.
