Superior of a monastery of an order older than the 11th century. Mitred Abbots bear episcopal insignia, ordain their monks to the Minor Orders (the Abbot of Monte Ca ino to the Subdiaconate) and enjoy prelatical rank and privileges, in some cases quasi-episcopal authority.
