Keel

(kel.) [A.S. cæle.] (Shipbuilding.) The lowest piece of timber in a ship, running her whole length from the lower part of her stem to the lower part of her stern-post, and supporting the whole frame. Sometimes a second keel, or false-keel, as it is called, is put under the first. See KEELSON. [s. 514]
