was organized as a territory in 1863, partly from territory ceded by Mexico to the United States by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) and partly from the Gadsden purchase (1853). It was Vel. V.—4 | l first visited by the Spaniards, Nizan in 1539, and Corona do in 1540, Jesuit mi ions were early established among the Indians.. The pop alation of Arizona in 1900 was 122,931.
