Polyænus

, a native of Macedonia, who wrote eight books in Greek of stratagems, which he dedicated to the emperors Ant on in us and Verus, while they were making war against the Parthians. He wrote also other books which have been lost, among which was a history, with a description of the city of Thebes. The best editions of his stratagems are those of Masvicius, 8vo, Leiden, 1690, and of Mursinna, 12mo, Berlin, 1756.――A friend of Philopœmen.――An orator in the age of Julius Cæsar. He wrote in three books an account of Antony’s expedition in Parthia, and likewise published orations.――A mathematician, who afterwards followed the tenets of Epicurus, and disregarded geometry as a false and usele study.
