(Ogle thorpe University, Milledgeville, Ga., 1857), Presbyterian; b. at Steubenville, 0., Feb. 28, 1828; graduated at Jefferson College, Canons burg, Penn., 1844; studied at Western Theological Seminary, Allegheny, Penn., 1845, and at Princeton Theological Seminary, N.J., 1846-48; was pastor at Char tiers, Penn., 1849-51; profe or of natural sciences at Hampden-Sidney College, Va., 1851- 55; pastor at Staunton, Va., 1856-58; August a, Ga., 1858-70; profe or of pastoral theology and homiletics in Columbia Theological Seminary, S.C, 1870-74; pastor at Wilmington, N.C., 1874- £5; profe or of theology in South-western Presbyterian University, Clarkesville, Tenn., 1885 to date. He has been stated clerk of the Southern General A embly since 1861, and has represented it in other ecclesiastical bodies; was a member of the second general council of the Alliance of the Reformed Churches, Philadelphia, 18S0, and read a paper on Evangelism; is a contributor to The South. Presbyterian Review, etc.
