Genitive

(jën'e-tiv.) [From L. genitivus, procreative.] (Gram.) The name of the 2d case in Greek and Latin substantives, denoting po e ion or relation, and corresponding with the Eng. preposition of. It is ordinarily marked in English by s with an apostrophe, thus ('s); as, my father's child; but when the plural terminates in s, the extra s of the genitive case is customarily omitted, and only the apostrophe employed; as, the horses' collars.
