KALAMAZOO

a city of Michigan, in Kalamazoo Co., of which it is the county seat. It is on the Michigan Central, the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern, and other railroads, and on the Kalamazoo River. It is a trade center for a large agricultural region which contains the most important celery market in the world. ‘The city is of great industrial and commercial importance. It has over 250 mercantile houses and over 70 distinct industries. The public institutions include Kalamazoo College, Michigan Female Seminary, State Insane Asylum, two hospitals, a childrens’ home, Home for Girls, Home for Feebleminded Children, and an Industrial School Home. Pop. (1920), 48,487. |
