Suprarenal

(su-prah-re’ -nal) [supra, above; ren, the kidney]. I. Above the kidney, as, e.g., the S. capsule. 2. Pertaining to the suprarenal capsule. S. Body, S. Capsule, a small triangular organ situated above the kidney, and consisting of an external or cortical, and an internal or medullary portion. The cortex consists of polygonal cells disposed in three layers, the zona glomerulosa, zona fasciculata, and zona reticttlaris. Fibrous septa, derived from the capsule, extend into the organ and separate the groups of cells. The medulla contains cords and networks of polygonal cells, and in its center ganglion - cells and non medullated nerve-fibers. The function of the S. body is not definitely known — it is believed to bear some relation to pigment-production. 609
