America; very valuable for its tough, fibrous inner bark; chief Hemp ( Cannabis sativa). used for twine and rope making, and for domestic use and for sail cloth. ly grown in Kentucky. It is sown broadcast in the spring on land prepared as for corn, and matures in ab. 100 days. It is then cut and allowed to cure for ab. two weeks, after which it is stacked until ab. Dec. 1, when it is spread out on the ground and retted. It is then gathered into shocks, where it stands until "broken," when it is ready for market. Hemp fiber is is also woven into fabrics
