Tyne

(tin,) an important river of the N. of England, having its rise in the W. part of co. North umber land, and, after an E. course of 80 m., falling into the North Sea bet, the towns of North and South Shields. Tyne'mouth, with NORTH SHIELDS, a parish and sea bathing town of England, in co. North umber land, near the mouth of the Tyne. The ruins of an ancient abbey are seated on a high rock, inacce ible on the sea-side: a strong fort commands the entrance of the river; and there are extensive military barracks. Pop. 39,959. [s. 915]
