Alfred ( son of Thomas Holmes of Lincoln ). b. London 9 Nov. 1837; learnt the violin from his father; with his brother Henry Holmes made a series of concert tours in Belgium 1855, Germany 1856, Austria 1857, Sweden 1857–9, Denmark 1860, Holland 1861; settled in Paris 1864, where he established a quartet party; produced at St. Petersburg his symphony Jeanne d’ Arc April 1868, which was performed in 1870 at Théâtre It alien , Paris, and at Crystal Palace, Sydenham 27 Feb. 1875; composed symphonies The Youth of Shakespeare , The siege of Paris 1870, Robin Hood , Charles XII , and Romeo and Juliet ; an opera in 5 acts called Inez de Castro 1869; overtures The Cid and The Muses ; Two nocturnes for the violin and piano , Leipzig 1857. d.
