[Lat.=a bur.] Bot.: A genus of Composites, tribe Carduiere, now generally made a synonym of Arctium. Lappa major is the same as Arctium lappa , sub-species Lappa proper; L. minor is the sub-species Arctium minus. The root of the burdock is tonic, aperient, sudorific, and diuretic, and was formerly used as a febrifuge. It has been given in rheumatism, gout, and skin diseases, and as a substitute for sarsaparilla. lăp-pā-cě-ous (or ceo us as shŭs), a .
