LL.D., 1745–1829. Delegate to Congre from N.Y. 1774-76 and 1778-79: U. S. Minister to Spain Spain 1780-82: Peace Commi ioner at Paris 1782-83; Sec. for Foreign Affairs 1784-89; first Chief-justice of the U. S. 1789; negotiator of a treaty with England 1794; Gov. of N.Y. 1795-1801; contributor to The Fed eralist. His son and biographer, WILLIAM, LL.D., 1789-1858, was Judge of West chester co.. N.Y., 1818–43, and active against slavery and intemperance.-His son, JoHN, 1817-1894, was Minister to Austria 1869-75.
