[NL. (J. E. Gray, 1870), ogl (os), n.; pl. o a (os'). [L. os ( o - ), sometimes o um, o u, pl. o a, also o ua, a bone; cf. Gr. ὀστέον, a bone.] Bone; a bone. - Os bullse. Same as bulla, 5. Also called tympanic bulla. - Os calcis, the bone of the heel: same as calcaneum or fibulare. Os capitatum. Same as magnum, 3. - Os centrale, a bone of the carpus, interposed between the bones of the proximal and distal rows, in reptiles and amphibia, and some mammals. Os cloace, the bone of the cloaca; an azygous median bone in relation with the cloaca and ischiopubic symphysis of various lower vertebrates, as among Sauria and Batrachia. - Os cord is, the bone of the heart, an o ification in the septum of the heart of some animals, as the ox. - Os cor onæ, in vet, surg., the coronary bone, small pastern, or middle phalanx of a horse's foot. See cut under hoof. - Os coxæ, the hip-bone or haunch bone; the innominate bone. See in nomina tum, 1.- Os falciforme, the falciform carpal vesicle of Talpine; the falcate acce ory bone of the wrist of moles. - Os furcatorium. Same as furcatorium. - Os hamatum, the unciform bone. Os humeri, the humerus. - Os hyoides, or os hyoideum, the U-shaped bone or tongue-bone.Os Incæ, a name given by Tschudi to the anomalous human interparietal bone. - Os incisivum, the premaxilla. - Os in nomina tum. Same as in nomina tum, 1.-Os lacrymale. Same as lacrymal, 1.- Os linguæ, os linguale, the hyoid bone. - Os lunare. Same as lunare. Os magnum. Same as magnum, 3. - Os marsupiale, in marsupial animals, a prepubic bone developed in the abdominal muscles in relation with the pouch and its contents.-Os mastoideum, the mastoid. - Os mirabile, the penis-bone. - Os odontoideum, the odontoid bone of many reptiles-a bone which when ankylosed with the second cervical vertebra, as is usual in higher vertebrates, becomes the odontoid proce of the axis. - Os orbiculare, a minute o ification at the tip of the long proce of the incus. - Os ped i cell a tum. Same os quadratum. Os ped is, in vet. surg., the coffin bone or distal phalanx of a horse's foot. See cut under hoof. Os penis, the penial bone, an o ification of the fibrous septum of the penis of many animals, as the dog. Os planum, the smooth surface of the ethmoid bone, forming part of the inner wall of the orbit; the orbital plate of the ethmoid bone. - Os priapi, the os penis. Os pubis. Same as pubis. - Os quadratum, the suspensorium of the lower jaw in birds. Also called hypo tympanic. O a supra sternal i a, two small o ifications sometimes found above the manubrium of the breast-bone; the episternal bones. - O a suturarum, bones of the (cranial) sutures: another name for Wormian bones.-O a Wormiana, Wormian bones; irregular bones developed, sometimes in great numbers, in certain sutures of the skull. Os sep iæ, the bone of a sepia or squid; crttlebone; cuttle. See calamary, sepiost. Os suffraginis, in vet. surg., the large pastern or proximal phalanx of a horse's foot. See cut under solidungulate. Os tarsale. Same as lacrymal, 1.- Os trans ver sale, the cro -bone or pe ulus of the syrinx of a bird. See pes sulus. - Os trans ver sum, a peculiar bone of the skull of certain reptiles. See cut under Ophidia. - Os tri basil are, the united occipital and sphenoid bones worcow. Os triquetrum, a three-cornered bone; a Wormian bone. Os unguis, the nail-like bone; the human lacrymal bone. os2 (os), n.; pl. ora (ō'rä). [L. os (or-), mouth: see oral.] A mouth; a pa age or entrance into any place: an anatomical term; specifically, the mouth of the womb.- Angulus or is. See an gul us. - Os tincæ, in an at., same as os uteri. - Os uteri, the orifice of the uterus. - Os uteri externum, the lower end of the cervical canal; the os tincæ. Also simply os uteri. Os uteri internum, the upper end of the cervical canal.
