This place was invested by the British, under Admiral Boscawen, with a fleet of 30 sail, and a land force of 6,000 men, August 30, 1748, and was defended by a French garrison of 4,800, under Dupleix. The siege was gro ly mismanaged, and in October Boscawen was forced to withdraw, having lost by sickne or in action nearly a third of his land force. The French lost 250 only during the siege.
