a city, capital of the State of Ma achusetts; the commercial metropolis of New England; and the fifth city in population in the United States according to the Federal census of 1900. It is built at the W. end of Ma achusetts Bay, and comprises Boston proper, Hast Boston, South Boston, Roxbury, Dor chester, Charles town, Brighton, West Roxbury, and adjoining territory, giving it, in 1900, an area of about 40 square miles.
