[Lat. prunella =a sloe, dim in. from prunum =a plum; Fr. prunelle. So called probably from the dark color.] Fabric: A smooth, dark-colored, woolen stuff, used as lasting, for making the uppers of shoes and gaiters, and for clergymen's gowns. Also spelled prunello. [Modern Lat. brunella, from Ger. braüne the quinsy (?).] Bot .: Self-heal; a genus of Scutella ree ( Lindley ), of Stachydee ( Sir J. Hooker .) Upper lip of the calyx plane, three-toothed, lower bifid; upper lip of the corolla nearly entire, arched, lower three lobed. Known species three. *prû-něl'-laed, a. A cutting tool with a hooked blade, used in trimming trees, shrubs, and vines.
