(Columbia College, New-York City, 1877); b. at Tanroggen, Ru ian Lithuania, May 6, 1831 educated at the rabbinical college at Zhitomer (Ru ia), the University of Breslau (Germany), and the General Theological Seminary (New-York City); elected mi ionary bishop of China, 1875 (declined) and 1877; resigned on account of serious and prolonged illne , 1883. He has translated the Old Testament from Hebrew into Mandarin Chinese, Mark into Mongolian, with Bishop Burdon of Hong Kong the Prayer-Book into Mandai'in Chinese, and was one of the committee to translate the New Testament into it. *
