Lighthouse

The Pharos, in the harbor of Alexandria, built 250 B.C., was 450 ft. high; the light was visible at 40 miles' distance. The Diamond Shoal lighthouse at Cape Hatter as, built in 1890, is 150 ft. high. Lighthouse construction demands the most perfect mansory foundations. Electric lights are now often used. The average annual expense of a lighthouse station in England is $1,500. The first lighthouse in the U.S. was erected in Boston harbor 1716. Since 1789 the general government has built and maintained all works of this description.
