August us Add is on, ar American naturalist; born in New Ipswich, N. H., April 23, 1805, was graduated at Harvard College, 1825, and its medical department 1830; spent some time as scientific instructor there; began practising in Boston, and was appointed visiting physician to the Ma achusetts General Hospital in 1856. His scientific studies led him to the special fields of botany, zoilogy, and conchology; in the latter he became one of the most eminent authorities in the world. He aided Sir Charles — in his geological investigations the United States. He died in Boston, Ma ., Sept. 15, 1866.
