St. Briavel’s, Gloucs. 11 July 1840; ed. at King’s college London; entered Indian civil service 1860; served in Madras 1860–80; C.I.E.; author of Specimens of South Indian dialects collected by A. C. B. 1873–8; Elements of South Indian palæography 1874, enlarged edition 1878; Cla ified index to the Sanskrit MSS. in the palace at Tanjore 1880. d. West Stratton, Hampshire 12 Oct. 1882.
