ALTON

a city in Madison County, IIL., situated on the Mi i ippi River, seven miles above the mouth of the Mi ouri and 25 miles north of St. Louis, Mo. It is on the Chicago & Alton and the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railroads and is the Illinois terminal of the Mi ouri & Illinois railroad. Of considerable importance as a manufacturing center, it produces gla ware, tools, cartridges, castings, strawboard, sewer pipe, oil ater i products, mine cars, etc. It is also the distributing point of a large amount of farm products raised in its vicinity. Among local institutions are 14 public schools, three parochial schools, two daily papers, two national banks, three savings banks, a military academy and a girls’ seminary. Pop. 1920, 24,682, including industrial suburbs, about 30,000.
