Capital of Jefferson co., Ky., on the Ohio, at the Falls; founded 1779-80; named from Louis XVI.; chartered 1828. It has good railroad communications and, aided by the canal around the Falls, unrestricted river commerce. manufactures are extensive and varied. Pop., 1890, 161,129.
