Graduated at Lawrence Scientific School, Harvard, 1862; was an artillery officer in the Union army during the Civil War and returned to the Lawrence Scientific School to teach geology and zoology; profe or of paleontology, Harvard 1868, of geology 1887, and dean of Lawrence Scientific School from 1891. He was in charge of the Kentucky Geological Survey 1873 - 1880, and from 1884 director of At i antic Division U. 8S. Geological Survey. Commi ioner of Agriculture of Ma achusetts; President of the Geological Society of America 1895.
