A circular piece of leather, or pasteboard, placed at the base of a screw, so as to prevent the metal surfaces from being injured when it is screwed home; it is also used to render screw and other junctions air-tight. Washer. In Architecture, a flat piece of iron pierced with a hole for the pa age of a screw, between whose nut and the timber it is placed to prevent compre ion on a small surface of the timber.
