Stuart, George Hay

Presbyterian layman; b. at Rose Hall, County Down, Ireland, April 2, 1816; educated at Ban bridge, Ireland; took up his residence in Philadelphia, Penn., went into busine ; is now president of the Merchants' National Bank of that city. He was the president of the United-States Christian Commi ion during the civil war (see art. Christian Commi ion in Schaff-Herzog Encyclopaedia, i. 449); is president of the Philadelphia Branch of the United- States Evangelical Alliance; vice president of the American Bible Society, of the American Tract Society, of the National Temperance Society; and is prominently connected with other religious and philanthropic a ociations.
