Saxa Rubra (Revolt of Maxentius)

Fought October 28, 312, between the Imperial troops, under Const an tine, and the legions of Italy, under Maxentius. The Italian cavalry, posted on the wings, was routed by Const an tine's horse; the infantry, thus left unsupported, fled from the field, only the Pretorians making a brave resistance, and dying where they stood. Maxentius escaped, but cro ing cro ing the Tiber into Rome by the Milvian Bridge, was forced by the crowd of fugitives into the river and drowned.
