Chaperon

(shap'e-rün.) [Fr. ] A kind of cap or covering for the head, which, in the Middle Ages, was worn in France by men and women of all ranks. The name is still applied in England to the hood of state worn by knights of the Garter when attired in their robes. In common parlance, one who attends a lady in public, as her guardian or guide.
