Alexander

Archibald, an American clergyman, of Scottish deseent, was born in Virginia, April 17, 1772, and died at Princeton, N. J., Oct. 22, 1851. He studied theology, and performed itinerant mi ionary work in various parts of Virginia; became president of Hampton-Sidney College in 1796, and pastor of a Presbyterian church in Philadelphia in 1807. On the establishment of Princeton Theological Seminary in 1812, he Was appointed its first profe or, a peice which he held till his death. His eldest son, JAMES WADDELL ALEX- ANDER (1804-1850), was a Presbyterian minister in Virginia, New Jersey, and at New York; and afterward bated in Princeton Theological eminary. He contributed to the * Princeton Review,” wrote more than 80 children’s books, a life of his father, and miscellaneous works.
