He a ociated with himself Maximian as August us 286, Constant i us and Galerius as Cæsars 292. and divided the administration among the four, retaining the East. He abdicated with Maximian 305. and spent his last years in retirement. He sought to compel uniformity in religion; and by advice of Galerius i ued an edict against Christians 303 which led to relentle persecution, ending with the victory of Const an tine 312.
