Golconda

Town and fortre 5 m. w. of Hyderabad, India. It has magnificent royal mausoleums, and was long famous for diamonds which were merely cut here. Gold. Au. At. wt. 197, sp. gr. 19.35, sp. ht..0324, valence I. III., mpt. 1045° C. Yellow metal, known to the ancients. It is not acted upon by oxygen even at a high temperature, and not attacked by any one acid, aqua regia being the only one which will di olve it. Chlorine, bromine, cyanides and thiosulphates di olve it. Reducing agents and many metals precipitate gold from its solution as a dark-brown powder. It forms two cla es of compounds: the aurous, in which it is univalent, and the auric, in which it is trivalent; in some compounds it is apparently bivalent.
